Nathan has book-ended his opening round at the Arnold Palmer Invitational with bogeys but in between there were some encouraging signs.

Nathan bogeyed the first when he found the back bunker with his approach but after a good par save at the par three second he birdied the 3rd and 4th, the first of those the result of a superb approach. He holed a lengthy putt at the 12th and then at the 13th holed from just off the green for another birdie and had moved to 3 under.

Nathan created a great opportunity to move to 5 under when his approach at the par five 16th finished 10 feet from the hole and although he missed that he secured the birdie and was at 4 under and two from the lead with two to play. A par save at the 17th and he was still 4 under playing the final hole but a pulled second would cost him a shot.

At 3 under 69, Nathan shares 9th position three behind the lead of Davis Love and J.B. Holmes.
